毎年、門前の桜が咲くと見事よ、と写真を送って来る義母。その桜は青い空にくっきりと咲き、清々しささえ感じます。

本州の桜の様に妖しく煙らないのはきりりと締まった空気のせいでしょうか。北海道の桜は大輪で，染井吉野とは種類が違うとも聞きました。この地，ブルックリンの桜は染井吉野とは名ばかり、同じ種のくせにくっきりはっきりと鮮やかに咲き誇ります。アメリカに育つと、情緒という着物は、脱ぎ捨ててしまうようです。

Mason Jar

LITHOGRAPH PRINTS

The mason jar is a relic of North American culture. One can frequently find them at antique markets. The mold made, cheap manufactured glass bottles were made in late 1980's and early 1990's. Transparent light blue or green with bubbles, lids were always made with lead and had inserted glass disks or glass lids with wire closers.

Seven of the Mason jar series prints are in The New York City Public library - Humanities & Social Science Library collection.

I have lived on the edge of Park Slope, Brooklyn, off 3rd Avenue on President Street for over 15 years. A few years ago my next door building owner renovated his apartment and applied to have some sidewalk trees on our block to the New York City Environment Department.

Ginkgo trees, European Bird Cherry trees and some America Yellow woods were planted.

European Bird Cherry blossom pretty early in spring and have a magnificent scent, but after the blossoms pass, the tree leaves turn into an ugly purple color. Ginkgo trees grow impatiently slow. American Yellow woods are too small to bear their flowers, so, they were pretty much a disappointment. I must wait one more decade to enjoy the tree lined block.

However, I found two young Yoshino Cherry trees planted on Nevins Street, one avenues away from where I live. I got so upset when I discovered them because on one side of the block is walled up without windows and on the other side a ConEdison branch parking lot for technicians. Since the location of the Yoshino Cherry blossoms is unfortunate, I believe that not many people have seen them or appreciated them, because the block is deserted.

Every year, when the two tress blossom, I go there to spend some time.

No one passes by except for cars with people who don’t even glance to look at the simple beauty on the streets that have been provided by the city to enjoy.

There were four large windows facing North East In the living room of my apartment. I placed Mason jars and some plant pots on the windowsill and enjoyed a calm light though the windows. From the windows I viewed a high raised clock tower building in Brooklyn until end of 90's.

Now, the view changed with high raised commercial and apartment buildings. The old view can now only be seen in my prints.

There was an art competition call from a college in a mid western state. The call was attractive to me because they advertised art pieces that were the size of a one-dollar bill, not bigger also not smaller than the half size of one dollar bill.

From my studio window, there was an unused brick chimney, a water tower and TV antennas. Nothing was special about the Brooklyn skyline, but it fit the size and I proudly created the space and atmosphere of Brooklyn. It won the best of show prize in 2001. It was my first award for my print work.

After the September 11, 2001, the Brooklyn skyline changed with the new disks for satellite TV reception. The TV tower antenna was destroyed with the World Trade Center. We who lived in NY could not watch TV without a cable connection or the disk.

The material change came with a harsh reality check for NYC residents after the date. 2002, New York
